Hello dear...

As usual, I want to reflect about what we have learnt in this week. Last Tuesday we studied about giving feedback for students. Now, I know how important giving feedback is. By giving feedback for students, they know what they are expected to and what should they do to improve their skill in reaching the goals of learning.
Unfortunately, giving feedback not always works in learning process. It depends on how the teachers' way in giving feedback.

Some teacher only give feedback in the end of learning process.There are also some teachers that give feedback after several assignments. It is not effective way. How come the students can improve their skill if the teacher did not inform what students should do in the next assignment. The most effective way is giving feedback after assignment. So the students know about their result in each assignment and what should they do in next assignment.

It is much precious lesson for us in giving feedback for studenta. In school experience before, only a few teacher that give feedback in each assignment. It is time for us to change to get better education in Indonesia.

Hello dears...

Actually I do not know what I have to reflect for this week, because I did not join our class in last session. How miserable I am, can not learn new things about assessment. But it is okay, never mind. I have asked friend to share about PETA's class in last session.

Last Tuesday, we still learn about assessment. As a matter of fact, assessment is not as simple as I think before. There are a lot of thing about assessment that I have to learn to be able to do assessment well.

There are two types of assessment, sumative and formative assessment. Summative assessment is assessment which is held as long as learning process happen. While formative assessment is assessment which is only held at the end of learning process. It is similar with what I have learnt before about conventional and standard base assessment. According to me, summative assessment is better that formative assessment. By using summative assessment, we not only assess the result of learning proc ess but also the progress of students' comprehension. Unfortunately, based on my experience in school visit several weeks ago, most of teacher in Indonesia still use formative assessment. That's problem is duty for us as a future teacher to make an improvement in doing assessment, to get better education in Indonesia.

Last week we still study about assessment. Assessment is not as simple as I think before. Assessment is not only giving the test and take the score at the end of learning process. Assessment is on going process that we can measure to know the progress of student comprehension and skill.

It is accordance to explanation from group 4 that present about assessment in the context of instruction. There are two type of assessment. Conventional model and Standard Based Model.

Conventional Model is assessment that only held on the end  of learning process. Most of old teacher often use  this kind of assessment. This kind of assessment is of course not effective to be applied in teaching and learning process because we can not measure the progress and development of students' comprehension and skill. We only measure whether the goal of learning is reached or not without concern about the process how we facilitate students to reach the goal of learning process itself.

And Standard Based Model is assessment that held on before, during and after the learning process. I think this is the real meaning of assessment. Assessment not only measured the result of learning process. We also have to concern about the process. How we facilitate the students in reaching the goals by instruction method and media that we use in teaching and learning. As a teacher we also can measured about the effectiveness of our instruction, so we can choose the most appropriate instruction for our students based on their characteristic. We also can see the progress of students' comprehension and skill, if there is any student who does not show positive progress, we can do reflection about our instruction and choose what we will do next to solve this problem.

Assessment. What is in your mind when you hear assessment?
Yup, that is what I have learn last week. Its question is also asked by Mam Lidya for us at the opening of class.

Before, when I hear assessment, I always imagine about test, score, examination, rubric, etc. I think it is similar to evaluation that aimed to measure students' comprehension. But, after having discussion and getting more explanation from Mam Lidya about what assessment in the classroom is, I know that both are different but very related.

Assessment is more about measuring the learning process included students' comprehension, the effectiveness of instruction by using so many ways. It can be an observation, quiz, game, open question, etc. While Evaluation, lies at the end of process it self. It is more about grading the learning result by using test or examination as a concrete proof that the examination can be designed as creative as possible. Like what my lecturer often do at SSE examination.

Why did I say that both are very related? Because by doing assessment intensively, as a teacher we know what we have to do next, what we can do for enhance students' comprehension to reach the goals or objectives of learning by getting a good score in evaluation process

That is my reflection for this week. Can't wait for study more about making effective assessment on the next session. I want to make an assessment that can stimulate their critical thinking to develop their ideas in fulfilling the goals and objectives of learning.

Reflection of seventh week

        Last meeting was sharing session for us after doing school experience for two weeks. It was so interesting session. By this sharing session, I get so many lesson not only from my experience but also from my friends' experience. We share each other about our school experience and also find together the solution for the problem that we got in school experience. There are so many problem that we have to face as a teacher. From this school experience, I know that to be a teacher is so challenging. Even difficult to be an inspiring teacher. But difficult doesn't mean impossible. We only need more practice to be expert in facing all of struggle that happen in the class. So grateful to be SSE Student, where I can go to school in each semester and find the reality of education in Indonesia recently. It will make me familiar ready to be teacher that really Indonesia need with all of problem that it has.

        In last discussion, lesson plan, again and again, become hot issue to be discussed.  Lesson plan was impressed useless to be implemented in the class because the condition of class is out of our imagination. Don't think that lesson plan is useless. However it is important to make a lesson plan before teaching. Well preparation will make the learning process better. We only need to make a lesson plan more flexible with the fact of condition it self. Of course the flexibility needs our creativity in teaching and solve the problem that out of planning. And the most of important is, we have to know well about the characteristic of students. In order to make a lesson plan implemented well, it must appropriate to learning style of students.

School Experience week 2

Hello guys... How is your teaching at school which you visited? It is addictive, isn't it? I think all of us is little sad when we have to go from that school after doing school experience for two weeks (-___-)'!I
 

As we know, in the second week, we have to implement our lesson plan. And my lesson plan cannot run well because of moving class system. Do you remember about my reflection before? It is about moving class condition. The students came late almost 15 minutes in every meeting. Can you imagine that? (According to me, school must re-think about moving class system and its effect.) And unfortunately, I did not have another plan about learning process. Consequently, I teach in hurry because of limited time. 

Moreover, in SMAIT Nurul Fikri, the duration for learning is not 90 minutes like usual that happen in the other schools but only 80 minutes. And the effect of this condition is my lesson plan cannot run well included the material cannot be delivered well. Some students complain that I teach very fast. But I got so many lessons from that condition. As a great teacher, next we have to prepare another lesson plan or at least make a lesson plan that flexible with the condition where we have to smart in choosing or eliminating some activities which is not too crucial so the material still can be completely delivered.

 Another problem that I got when I was implementing my lesson plan was, the time that students need in doing each activity is out of my prediction. Maybe it happens because I don’t know the characteristics of students well in catching the material. That’s why I can exactly predict time that they need to do discussion, to make a note, to understand the lesson, to do assignment, and etc. From this experience, I know that next is so important for the teacher to know the characteristic of students well and adjusting every activity in the class accordance to the characteristics of students. For teaching in the first time, I felt very bad. But time by time, everything became better. I know the characteristic of students and success in doing adaptation with them. Finally the lesson plan can run well. So happy see the students happy study with me, and of course understand about the material. That's why, it is so sad to leave them when we were became closer.

 Hot issues that we often discuss at campus happened at school that I visited. The title of my master teacher is S.Si, not S.Pd. That’s why he did not too concern about the learning method. The most important thing for him is about the content, how the students can understand the material well. He does not too agree when I implemented fun learning. According to them, the students only focus to the fun, not to the content. Whereas, I tried to build students’ interests in mathematics. If they interested in learning math, they will enjoy the process even the process maybe complicated, they will be fun even the more concentration are needed in learning math.

However I learn so many lessons from him especially about delivering contents. They have amazing way in making review and organizing the content to be delivered in order to make the students easy to understand. He knows how to connect the new material with students’ prior knowledge in order to make a flow of learning became enjoyable. So, to be a complete teacher in facilitating students, it is reprimand for us as a candidate of teacher that besides mastering the pedagogies skill, we also have to mastering the content well although the content is not as deep as them whose title S. Si.

E-Refleftion School Experience

Hello guys, how is your school experience? It is so exciting, isn't it? So am I. I have a lot of story to share with all of you. Okay, let me introduce the school that i have visited for one week. SMAIT Nurul Fikri. It lies at Depok, West Java. From the name of school, we can see that, it is islamic school. Absolutely right, in every morning before starting the lesson there is obligatory ritual, reading quran and pray dluha. I think it is very good to be applied in school, surely accordance with their belief. As we know, school not only place for learning subjects but also for creating good characteristic of students, religious activity is also important to do at school as a foundation to create students' character.

There is something different in SMAIT Nurul Fikri. Start from this year, school apply moving class system. Actually, I often heard about that system included the advantage that we can get by applying it such us  the students will get new class and new atmosphere for each subject to motivate them to study and avoid them become bored, and many the other advantages. But until now, I never see directly about application of moving class.

Now I have a chance for observe directly about the effectiveness of moving class. And according to me, sorry to say that its system doesn't work well. Maybe it depends on school agreement about moving class it self. In SMAIT Nurul Fikri, they don't give time for students to move. The end of one class is one time with another class to start. Actually it can be solve if each class ended early to give time for students to move. Unfortunately each class ended when the bell rang. It means, there is no time for students to move. Moreover, students often abuse time for moving to go to canteen or the other forbidden activities. And I think, actually it is not wise if each class has to end earlier because, based on my experience, it will be difficult to arrange effective lesson plan in short time. There is a worry that the content of material subject can not be delivered well in limited time especially for mathematics subject. So, according to me, it will be more wise if we certain time for students to move. And school also need to be more strict in disciplining student when they move from one class to another class.

Okay guys, that is my reflection for school experience first week.

Second Reflection for 4th meeting

I am sorry for being late. Actually I have posted my reflection since Thursday ago. I don't know whats going on with this blog recently, my posting was gone. And unfortunately, i have known just now about it. So I late to make the make up of my reflection, but it is out of my control. it will be precious experience for me. Next, I will check and make sure that, my reflection has been posted well.

Our agenda on last meeting was Micro Teaching. All groups presented their lesson plan one by one. This activity is so fun and effective for us as a practice before do teaching assistant in school experience later. Besides watching some funny activities (because we have to act as if we were primary students), we also can learn each other about models of instruction that effective to be applied.

Everything run well actually, unfortunately the two latest group can not presented their lesson plan as well because the time class almost end. I think, maybe it happened because the early group can not manage time well, so they only left very little time for latest group. It is lesson for us in doing presentation, hopefully next time we can manage time well in doing presentation accordance to the rule.

Another problem that i saw was, when the class after end, audience have been bored and less respect. I just want to say that we have to fair for all groups. We have to be more cooperative in helping each other. Please give your attention fully even you have been bored when the class almost end. Think as if you were that last group, how pity.. :'(

Third Meeting Reflection

E-Reflection PETA

                Last Tuesday, October 4^th 2011, we learnt about Models of Instruction. It is so interesting topic. In fact, we can combine several models of instruction in one time. We learnt this topic by using Jigsaw method. Actually learning by Jigsaw method is effective. Unfortunately time for each student to read the material to be an expert is very limit. So, some of student had not finished yet when we were asked to share each other what we had read. Another problem in learning process yesterday was the difference comprehension among students although they have read the same topic and share about the reading. Hopefully next meeting, Ibu Lidya wants to give us more explanation about Models of Instruction in order that we have same comprehension about Models of Instruction one another. Besides the difference comprehension among students, there is worry that we have made wrong conclusion about what we have read because of our ability in English which is not very well.

                Yesterday, one of team presented about their lesson plan. It is very excited, we can learn from the other teams. Unfortunately, the other friends are like less respect. I think we have to cooperative. I mean, we have to respect when another team was doing presentation. We have to respect each other and support each other about microteaching, because if there is a student that makes a noisy, the microteaching cannot run well.

                That’s all my reflection for this week. Hopefully we can be more cooperative in the class.

E-Reflection - Second Meeting

Second Meeting in PETA

                Last Tuesday is second meeting in PETA. We watch a video and asked to reflect what are activities in that video and analyze which activities is effective, and which activities is ineffective. It is so interesting. Besides doing discussion and know the other friends’ opinion, I also feel like watching me in the future. By watching this video, I can see what will happen with my students if I do teaching method like what the teacher did in the video.

                From that video, conclusion that I can take is class activities will be more effective if the students are active involved on that. So as a creative teacher in the future, I have to be creative in making lesson plan who the students can be active involved. According to me, the weakness of that video is, there is no individual assessment. Individual assessment is very important to do because we have to measure comprehension of each student about our material. Then individual assessment can be reflection tool for us to correct the effectiveness of teaching method that we use for all students. We also can choose or create another teaching method that accordance to cover all of students comprehension.

                From that video, we also can conclude that preparing a lesson plan doesn’t mean that we must be strict with the lesson plan. As a creative teacher we must be creative and flexible about the condition and mood of our students. We can change the lesson plan as long as it still covers the objectives of learning that day.

                Okay, that is the reflection that I can give for our last meeting. I can’t wait to get more knowledge about how to be a great teacher at next meeting.

E-Reflection 1st meeting

E-reflection PETA

                 In the first meeting, we haven’t talked more about the lesson. Last Tuesday, besides introduction we also do reflection to our self and share each other why we want to be a teacher and do we feel that we have been able to be a teacher. It is so interesting part. As a matter of fact, I am not alone who don’t want to be a teacher at the first time. Fortunately, having studied at SSE all of us get inspiration not only to be a teacher but also educator who can make better Indonesia through education. Like SSE’s lecturer did for us, the way of our lecturer in teaching is very educated and full of spirit from their deepest heart, it makes us interested to active involved the learning process. Then I know, to grab intention of my students and make them interested to be active involved in my class, I also have to teach and educate them with pleasure heart.

                The last activity that we did last Saturday is discussion in group about effective teaching, certainly characteristic of teacher who can create an effective teaching in the class. Wow each of us has many points of view about this topic. And it’s useful for us to remind each other about the other characteristics of teacher that support an effective teaching. In fact, the characteristic of teacher that they suppose is more than what I imagine. So, thanks for all my friends, I get many additional knowledge from you. What happen in last discussion also make me realize that, even most of opinion is similar, there must be a little bit different points of view about from everyone, included my students, about everything. So, the reflection from me is, it is needed to make an agreement with the students about what is effective teaching according to them that they want to do.
