New Class, New Friends, New Course, New Lecturer, New Spirit…


At the first meeting in this course, I imagine that this course will explore about ‘’How to Teaching Well”. But after I hear from lecturer of this course I get a new point, that this course won’t only explore that but also explore “How to be a Good and Great Teacher”.

A wonderful lesson that I got from the meeting is the different between ‘’good teacher’’ and ‘’great teacher’’. At the first I think that both of them are same. But after I have known, that’s wrong. Both of them are different. ‘’good teacher’’ is good in teaching and ‘’great teacher’’ is good teaching and inspiring.

From the meeting I get another great point also. We should have A Inspiring Person who can inspire us in our life. We can take from her/him as a inspiration, motivation, and goals in our life. because if we don’t have a inspiring person, we won’t have a guider of life. And perhaps, we will confuse where and what we must reach and get in this life.

So, the mind point is “be a great person as you can, inspiring yourself and others”

At Tuesday September 20^th 2011, I have first class which was PETA. I don’t know what it was. PETA = Principle Effective teaching and Assessment,  I can conclude that “It’s subject which learn how to teach effectively students and give them best assessment”. Meanwhile, in second semester I got TPTLM & ITLM subjects; don’t you know that those courses were too much reading text? Its language was too difficult to understand, even honesty I never read those the module handbook. Maybe I only read chapter 1 as beginning to know what subject those were. But I read some sentences I felt Bored, because there were nothing pictures and those were full of texts. It made those subjects was boring. If I compare PETA subject with TPTLM & ITLM, they are same, because all material of them must be full of reading and reading again, bored again, I felt sleepy, I always have presentation every week.

            However, in the first meeting of PETA I felt shock, because the lecturer was too young booo… Her name was Mrs. Lidya and you must know that learning with this lecturer was not conventional again. We got free to express our creation; however we had to be in her rule. Mrs. Lidya was too caring, understanding what we wanted to. She was not so serious and inflexible. Moreover, in the first meeting she wrote our opinion about the good and teacher. She also gave a future reflection to us to become a positive teacher and able to avoid negative behavior. With understanding those characteristics, it became a reflection for my friends and me. Besides, it also became a reflection for Mrs. Lidya about what things we don’t want to get from boring subject (PETA). She also asks me who my inspiration is. My answer was that I didn’t want to be a teacher; I had to fell sincere in this profession. The importance thing that if I want to be useful person, so I think this profession is proper me. Moreover, if I want to be wonderful person, so this is correct profession because all profession are born from the teacher and the thing that probably becomes inspiration for every people is pride of teacher profession. Hopefully in the next time, this course also will be better from this meeting, Amin…

E-Reflection PETA Dwi Sintia section B 2010 (2010110020)

E-Reflection the first meeting 

On Tuesday ago, exactly date 20 September 2011, this is where the second day for me to study at my college. Which before that is my holiday for semester 2, after that suddenly, as there is feel confuse in my self, when I see a new lecturer in my college. And I not presume, apparently a new lecturer that, she will teach in my class. Actually, there is little feel as nervous. But, apparently I am wrong, because when my new lecturer, and she start going to teaching, (Wahhh) my new lecturer is very kindly, so I feel comfort with my new lecturer, and name from my new lecturer is Ms. Lydia. So, she is very kindly. And Ms. Lydia teach the course PETA (Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment).

The first meeting, Ms. Lydia examine about Effective Teaching, and I with together my friends in the class, we ordered to make group, and each group ordered to discuss about Effective Teaching. So, I feel have fun, with activity in the class. After each group did discussion, and we order to moving, from one flip chart to other flip chart, which have did each group about Effective Teaching. And the answer from each group, there is same, but also there is not same. All that, because come from our thinking different.

But from all that, I and all my friends in the class can be study mutually equip. By the way, if I hear about Effective Teaching, suddenly I direct imagine about am I can become a teacher candidate, which I can do effective teaching in the learning when I teaching in the classroom. I know, to achieve all that actually not easy. Although not easy, but I want straight try and try, to become a nice teacher, which can do learning with effective teaching.

And then, when I read at a web which web that is (http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/principles/teaching.html), and I found there are many teaching principles, and they are 1. Effective teaching involves acquiring relevant knowledge about students and using that knowledge to inform our course design and classroom teaching, 2. Effective teaching involves aligning the three major components of instruction: learning objectives, assessments, and instructional activities, 3. Effective teaching involves articulating explicit expectations regarding learning objectives and policies, 4. Effective teaching involves prioritizing the knowledge and skills we choose to focus on, 5. Effective teaching involves recognizing and overcoming our expert blind spots, 6. Effective teaching involves adopting appropriate teaching roles to support our learning goals, and 7. Effective teaching involves progressively refining our courses based on reflection and feedback.

So, I must keep my spirit to achieve all that. And  I must say that my self can, so I can, and I want to try that, to become a teacher candidate which can effective in the teaching and learning in the classroom. So, keep PETA, keep PETA, keep PETA, (^_^) (yu….hu….).

Tuesday, September 20^th, 2011.

It was our first meeting in PETA course with Bu Lidya.

The first activity was introducing our self to her,sharing session with pair, discussing about effective and ineffective teaching and also discussing together. From the activities made us more active in class because Bu Lidya gave me many time to talk than her. She only as a facilitator in the class and also as moderator  in our discussing. 

As we know, Sharing makes us usual to explain our opinion to other people and improve our critical thinking. Not only that,  I also heard carefully about our pair said because i have responsible to tell every information in front of the class about my friend . And then, I can reflect my self base on  my friend  experience.

In this case,  remembering about SCL (Students Center Learning) in last semester which student has dominant to active in teaching and learning process. It will makes noisy condition in first meeting but if we continue to do it so makes student usual to use this method. Actually, using it in elementary school have to be patient to use various teaching style.  It learn to student for understanding the instruction. They have time to talk and then heard carefully if the teacher talks.When one of us said anything, Bu Lidya Gives more attention with looking carefully, gives many feedback, kidding with us, etc. She look like a friend who ready heard our stories. The condition class does not strike but it was going well. 

For this course, i have expectation to get many effective way to teach my students in the future so they think that study is fun and interesting.

In the first  meeting in the course PETA, i teach about how to teach effectively.
I think this is very important for us how teach prospective  teacher to capital later.
Because it is important to make students better understand the subject.
mom lidya also to us mention some of the character of good teachers and bad teachers.
in this class PETA i found a way to learn a new one from the mom lidya like to make this reflection.
Actually, we often to make reflection like this. But in here is where we should be a reflection on the post in blog.

At the first meeting in the class PETA is reviving myself as a candidate of teacher. My lecturer, mom Lidya, reminding us all why we want to become a teacher? what we want to achieve when we become teachers?. mom lidya allowing the us all to share what we feel and we want as a candidate of teacher. not only me who have the desire to not become a teacher at first. so many desires that might be considered better than a teacher such as doctors, nurses, and others. I also want to be a doctor in the beginning, many stories that I live now in SSE with friends with the goal of becoming a teacher. finally I think * that there would be no great men if there is no teacher who taught him to be great *. yes all great men come from a great teacher as well.

Lidya's mother told us in groups to create posters that contain how effective teachers and how teachers are not effective. This is opening my eyes as a prospective teacher. not only needed by the teacher can teach, but what is in want of teachers by their students. that is ignored by the teacher. My friend and I believe that we will have a valuable and expensive lessons required by a mom lidya in this PETA. how to teach effectively? assess how effective? we are all going to get here ... on PETA ..

I was so very afraid when i started my semester with 8 lesson and much "SKS". some of the lesson is new for me, like PETA,TLNLAG,and UET and all of that lesson have new lecturer that i haven't been know and meet them yet.

But in the first meeting with Ms.Lidya, i  didn't worry to much about PETA because Ms.Lidya was very kindly, and i'm sure that Ms.Lidya will help me much.How happy i am?

In the first meeting,she introduce her self..there were something that surprised me. The first one was about she have a husband and a child(because i thought she was single), and the second one was about her educational background,(she told us that she taken law faculty in her Bachelor and Educational psychology in her Master).Her bachelor was unconnected with PETA,so i think how comes? And she take psychology in her Master make me very very jealous,because i have a plan to take psychology in my master.hehehe

The other reason that made me so surprised was about her job. i was so very interesting when she told that she teach the students that have down syndrome. Because actually that is my dream.

SO Ms.Lidya you make me have more spirit then before.

In the first meeting she explained about the program that will we doing during the semester. She ask about our dream and she asked us to make a group of 2 person and tell each other about our self as teacher candidate and then she ask us to tell couple-friend's answer in front of the class.

And i thing this lesson will be very great. hopefully.

New semester is new spirit. Yah In this 3th semester we have eight subjects. One of them is PETA (Principle of Effective Teaching and Assessment). In the first meeting of PETA, we introduce our self, start from the teacher until the module and of course all of the assignments. By the way one of the assignments is writing reflection. If I write reflection I remember my reflection in the Bahasa Indonesia Subject in the second semester.

Ohhh ya. I have a teacher, her name is Miss Lidia, and she is beautiful, very kindly, and modish. If I look at you Miss, I remember my teacher in Senior high school because her style and her hair are same with you miss, her name is Mom Sri but some of them call her is “Mom gaul”. Because she is very modish and very kindly, she always gives the students game when the students bored.  

Miss, I also remember my teacher in senior high school because your name same with her. Her name is Lydia Valensia. She is math teacher and she is my favorite teacher because If I have class session with her, she always gives me motivation word and her method is very fun and various also sometimes gives games.

After we introduce, we discuss about effective teaching. My opinion effective teaching is based on strategy the teacher makes class is be fun, meaningful, make students understand the material. Based on my experiences, when the teacher gives the material to students, the teacher must care to students, teaching with various methods, must make the students  active in class, keep the emotional, manage time and up to date to new information for share with the students. I hope by learning PETA, I could be a teacher who is needed by students and I will be able to teach effectively.

Umi Salamah_E-Reflection_1st meeting

“Let me introduce my self, my name is Lydia Aritha”, said the new lecturer who has married :). She conducts a PETA course. Hmmm,, is anybody know about PETA??!! Ok,, PETA is Principles effective teaching and assessment. Thursday, 20^th September 2011 is my first day starting the PETA course in the third semester. After got some explanation about the objective of PETA course, I got the conclusion that PETA is a course which dominance with how is the way we give the effective assessment in learning process. The PETA course starting with the introduction the student of section B of one by one, such us the full our name, nick name, and where are we come from. After that, continue with the introduction from Bu Lydia. I am proud with her, because so many nice experiences that she was gotten, such us she ever taught in garden school and then become a teacher of special needs children of Down Syndrome. Ya, it’s so nice experience guys,, ^_^

                Then, the learning continued with writing about what is our hope and expectation in PETA course on the post-it. I am happy when there is a lecturer which appreciate with together agreement, so from the post-it, as a lecturer can know what is want to from the students. I think that’s can positive effect to all, because from that thing the students feel appreciate from the teacher. So, it can appear the nice relationship between students and teacher. Nothing word that the teacher know all of about anything, same as when we make a regulation class room together, so indirectly that between students and lecturer can learn each other, so it can objective assessment.

                Not only all of them, but also the other learning is a discussion between us, Bu Lydia use the Think pair share method. We are each discussion about :

1.       Who’s become inspiration from us to be a teacher?

2.       Are we appropriate to be a teacher, and why?

3.       What is our goal? And what is our expectation in PETA course? Are PETA course can effective in teaching learning when we become a teacher?

I got change to discussion with Indah and Devi. We share about our opinion each other. In fact, Indah and Devi do not want to be a teacher firstly, but day by day they want to be a teacher. I am proud with them, because the words from them parents could be inspiration for them, such us anything the job that we do, it’s better if we do heartfelt and useful to other people. Its same as if we want to be a teacher, so they sure with their  choice to be better education in Indonesia. So do I and that’s my goal actually. Hmmmm,, I think, it’s nice discussion.

Susi Dariah_E-Reflection_1st meeting

The second day attending class in 3^rd semester on last Tuesday is learning about Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment. Actually, I was not in a good condition because of a cough that I was suffering from, so that I didn’t really focus at all. Fortunately, that is the first meeting of this subject, so that the activities is most of about introduction about ourselves (students and lecturer) and also about what this subject will be about.

There were some of activities in that course, for example we were asked to reflect about our experience of having a wonderful teacher even an awful teacher in our learning journey. At the process of thinking about it, I reflect that on my journey I was very often getting the interest in a course because of the teacher. Because of the teacher who had the good way to teach me, who could inspired me, who had a good personality, who always motivated me, and other reasons that stimulating me to recognize that teacher has a big role for the successful teaching and learning process. If I used to be influenced by my teacher to get the better even the worse learning process, why my students could not be influenced by me in the future? From that question, I recognize that I will have a big role to the learning process of my future students..

When I remember about the awful teachers in my past learning, suddenly I think that will I be a teacher like them? it’s actually a scary question for me, but I do believe because I’m still learning how to become a great teacher at this great university (at least for me) and I just started to learn how to build effective teaching and assessment by this course, I will be able to give the good influence for my future students. :)

Jakarta, Tuesday 20 September 2011. New courses, new professors, and new science,,, Principle of Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA), new courses are very angered me because abbreviation, plus  the name lecturer of this course has the same name with my young sister. Hahaha ... Looks like I'll get a lot of things that are important and interesting in the world of teaching. Hemmm .... nyammiiii .... hahaha .. 

It is a very exciting time in the classroom today when  bu Lydia asked us "what inspires you to become a teacher?" in my mind, I just remember the days when i was elementary school, because the elementary school teachers who inspired me to become a teacher. As described by Wiga yesterday, my elementary school is same like the school in the Laskar Pelangi movie, because my school with the school situation depicted in the Laskar Pelangi movie is very similar, ranging from state classrooms made of wood, zinc roof, until the number of each class never exceed the number 20, really sad when I remember my school situation at that time. Even many of my neighbors who doubt the school, some are even told me to get out of school, but I do not care about the words people speak ill of my school is. Things that make me make my elementary school teacher is my inspiration, my teacher struggles to teach at my school, we teach persisted even heard rumors of people here and there, faithfully accompanied us even though their salaries may be paid late, they do not give up even our present class although the distance of their homes to our school is very far, indeed this is what I call a real teacher. Love You My Elementary School... :)

At the beginning of PETA class, I didn’t know yet what I want to study here. Then, the lecturer asks about teacher candidates’ motivation of being teacher. I still thinking of it, actually I didn’t have big motivation to becoming a teacher yet. Being a teacher is not my dream, but I always amazed teacher profession. Teacher job is very honorable and students need a teacher to become a successful person. That’s my first point of becoming a teacher. And I choose SSE as my college because I believe that I can get more interesting things of becoming a teacher. Until now, my choice is right because I have got a few skill and knowledge of becoming a teacher. I’m very thanks full.

Because of this course I realized all of it. I think this course will show me the others motive of becoming a true teacher. Let’s see in next meeting.

Making realized the teacher candidates of motivation being a teacher, the lecturer asks about what effective teacher is. Firstly lecturer asks generally what we are known about effective and ineffective teacher differences. I’m just remembering my past studies of mathematics, which is fun except my Senior high School studies of mathematics. That’s so ceremonious and there is no flexibility of learning. Just write down what teacher write and answer the question very similar with the teacher’s answer. I’m bored and being not interested again of mathematics and the result is my bad score at that grade. Now, I realized that is called ineffective teacher. And I don’t want to be teacher like that.

Than lecturer ask us as a group to discuss deeply about the differences. There are so many opinions about it, and sometimes we argue about some character because in one opinion that is effective and another opinion are inversely. But at the end we agree that a character is effective but can be ineffective if there is over acting. 

That discussion is so fun I think, understanding thing by two sides different.

OK that’s all of the day. I’m waiting for the next meeting.

In the first meeting, i review about my future or my dream want to be a teacher. I shared to my friends about who give me inspire to be a teacher, what my planning as a teacher candidate and then what is my purpose study PETA.

When my lecturer explained about our modul and what topic will we discuss, iam very interested because the material is fun and teach me to be a great teacher.  I hope after i study abaout PETA i can make an efective class, assesment, and efective in teaching.

Besides, i also learn about types of teacher such that an efective teacher and non-efective teacher. Every group wrote the types of teacher and shared to another group. Its very fun and i enjoy it. From this activity i learn to be an efective teacher and great teacher.

First time, i got Principle of Effective Teaching and Assessment subject, i thought that subject was not different with ITLM and TPTLM. But, when i started that course, it was more detail, such as effective teaching and assessment.

In class, we got introduction first about what is PETA (Principle of Effective Teaching and Assessment). I think that's very important for the first time of lesson. We can know what should we do in PETA course and know what the expectations of PETA subject which it will make us (teacher candidate) to be "A Great Teacher".

After that, we worked into groups and discussed about characteristics of effective teaching and non effective teacher. I think that activity very good because everybody has different answers but it still same about it. We talked about teacher behavior and teaching methods. After we discussed, we asked about which point we didn't understand. This method very important because student centered learning.

Finally, first time in PETA course, i want learn about PETA.. Thank you

E-Reflaction week 1 Principle of effective teaching and assessment

Ok,,,the new semester  was coming and it’s time to full fill all of the days by assignment and assignment again.

So,,welcome to the war,,,hahahha…

But, I don’t worry about that because I knew that those assignments would help me in understanding materials deeply. And for Mrs. Lidya,,,welcome to our beloved campus ya.. and enjoy with us…

Move on to the other topic. Yups,,it’s all about the first meeting in Principle of effective teaching and assessment  (PETA) course and PETA itself. 

I think I have a good impression for the first meeting of PETA course.  Why? It’s because how the lecture introduced us about what Principle of effective teaching and assessment itself. It was not only used her presentation as a media to tell us about what we will learn in PETA but also used interactive discussion with us as teacher candidates to know our opinion about what the characteristics of effective teaching and assessment and how to create an effective teaching in class. 

How much fun it is and I’m very fond of such activity. By this activity, I realize that to be a good and professional teacher is not easy.  Not only deliver all of the materials in class but also has to sensitive to the condition and students’ needs in that time. Besides that, a good and professional teacher has to know how to deal with various teaching and learning context.  She or he also has to make the most learning out of every single student by trying for the balance of many elements in his or her classroom. 

The Interactive discussion gives me a chance to express my opinion or even share information with the others and I wish such activity will have on the next session.  It’s really effective to help me or might be my friends in understanding all of the material in PETA course. As a teacher candidate, I really need this course as my guide to be a good teacher and because of that I have a great passion to learn more and more in principle of effective teaching and assessment course.

I think it’s enough for the reflection of week 1 about the principle of effective teaching and assessment course and I’ll continue my reflection of week 2 about the principle of effective teaching and assessment course net week.

                 In the first meeting, we haven’t talked more about the lesson. Last Tuesday, besides introduction we also do reflection to our self and share each other why we want to be a teacher and do we feel that we have been able to be a teacher. It is so interesting part. As a matter of fact, I am not alone who don’t want to be a teacher at the first time. Fortunately, having studied at SSE all of us get inspiration not only to be a teacher but also educator who can make better Indonesia through education. Like SSE’s lecturer did for us, the way of our lecturer in teaching is very educated and full of spirit from their deepest heart, it makes us interested to active involved the learning process. Then I know, to grab intention of my students and make them interested to be active involved in my class, I also have to teach and educate them with pleasure heart.

                The last activity that we did last Saturday is discussion in group about effective teaching, certainly characteristic of teacher who can create an effective teaching in the class. Wow each of us has many points of view about this topic. And it’s useful for us to remind each other about the other characteristics of teacher that support an effective teaching. In fact, the characteristic of teacher that they suppose is more than what I imagine. So, thanks for all my friends, I get many additional knowledge from you. What happen in last discussion also make me realize that, even most of opinion is similar, there must be a little bit different points of view about from everyone, included my students, about everything. So, the reflection from me is, it is needed to make an agreement with the students about what is effective teaching according to them that they want to do.

Today is the first meeting on PETA subject. My PETA lecturer is Miss Lydia. I hope i can find the chemistry with her :) . So I feel enjoy, safe, and comfort on her class and this subject too.

PETA is Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment. Ya, effective teaching and assessment. Both of them are an important thing for to be a teacher. For my personally, I hope this subject can help me to control class situation and know the character of students when my class progress, and also make an effective teaching.

For assessment, on my personally I still confuse about that on the fact when my class progress. I mean, I confuse for display that to be the data :(

When the first meeting also remembering me about my dream, my goals for to be a teacher. Something and someone which inspiring me for to be a teacher. But actually, for now I have not been felt be a really teacher. Because when I teaching last month on Elementary School, I still find it difficult for make our students calm down :(
I have on this subject I can learn more about effective teaching and assessment for my class future :)

Tuesday, 20 September 2011. I have a new great class with new lecturer. In course Principles Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA), I can get more than the theory, and this course very important to understand. PETA is very interesting course, because I can share my experience with my friends about effective teacher, and we did very active learning. I mean that it’s very difficult to be a great teacher (inspired, creative, and innovative). But, after the first class, I think I can find the solution in this course, to find easy and effective ways how to transfer my knowledge to my students. PETA will be more effective for me when I enjoy it. I can’t feel bored in this course, actually the active learning made our class more enjoyable. Every method to teaching and assessment that use in this course are very effective, innovative and applicable. It will be useful for everybody who wants to be either a great teacher or a good teacher. My lecturer, her name is Ms. Lydia. She is very friendly, care, up to date about the issues, respectful, and knew how to find out our focus. In my opinion, she has characteristic of an effective teacher.
