Feedback...Feedback

Asking Question and Giving Feedback, that is the point of lesson the day. The lecturer way giving us abstract of the feedback is really interesting. I think that is one of the extraordinary ways, creative, innovative, and effective. I was thinking what methods else for teaching students about mathematics which is complex of numerals. Hmm, I was also enjoying the course because the flow and connection of each activity was really cool and clear. In each activities, the lecturer ask about our opinion of the activities, and she success guide us to the main topic which is also reflect on her methods. She taught about asking question, and she has done the way of asking question on her teaching methods. I really interested of it. “Miss you has inspired me a lot”.
Back to the topic, asking question and giving feedback. In my opinion, it is great for giving direct feedback for students performance, because the students was enhance by the feedback and will do the best next . Giving direct feedback will being the teacher assessment and also students’ assessment of themselves. It was really nice meeting. I’m waiting for the next meeting.

UN as a Summative Assessment

At the beginning of the class, I was confused by the two kind of assessment that is formative and summative, because I did not know yet what kind of assessment of them are. I’m absent of the previous meeting about it. And I just realized that I really missing the content. Then, we have to write the differences in a group. Yeay! Thank You God. By the discussion, I get the point of the two kind of assessment. I love the activities, and that activity is really effective in teaching and learning.
Summative assessment is a assessment that held at the end of the whole process in academic period. The purpose of this assessment is to measure students understanding at the end of period. The example: pencil and paper test at final test or mid test; final semester project; final essay; etc. In my opinion the kind of assessment like this has to be very clear and complete for assessing the students. Why? Because this assessment just given once at the end of period and the score will have a huge affect for achievement. So, the preparations have to ready well such as the rubrics, question. They have to be very clear, complete, and complex because it will measure students of the whole period.
One sample of the summative assessment at Indonesia that didn’t agree by me is Ujian Nasional (UN). This kind of assessment being measurement of students for three years, whereas every semester students have being assessed by final test. Back to the purpose of the assessment its self, It is for measuring students achievement for a period, and when it has been complete, reevaluate students is not needed. I think UN is not really appropriate and effective, just imagine that students have already test then they have to repeat again. If the purpose is just for equivalence the education at Indonesia, that’s fine, I mean the score is not being focus of the students’ permit determinant. At the facts, UN being something percent of students’ permit determinant. OK, just take it as a comment for education at Indonesia.
Going back to the summative assessment, we really have to be careful for preparing it.

Assessment and It's Domains

Finally, I get the idea why assessment has to be variety and including many aspects. Yeah, it caused of the domain itself. Assessing students completely need more criteria rather than just assess by paper and pencil style. For instance, actually all students are unique, that is why as a teacher we should appreciate it, but at the teaching and learning process, teacher often forgot their uniqueness by assess by limited aspects of assessment. It is happened because teacher didn’t understand clearly about the idea of assessment.
By PETA course, I got full understandings of assessment by any aspects. Assessment has three domains: cognitive, affective, and psycho motor. Today’s education in Indonesia focus on assessing by pencil and paper test which is belongs to cognitive domains. The government has decided the pencil and paper test as orientation of assessment, whereas this type of assessing just measures the students cognitive. In my opinion, assessing by this domain only is not really complete assessment because i think assessing students who unique need to use the three domains assessment for assessing. By completing all three domains of assessment, teacher can approach the students knowledge, then implementing activities which include all domains, and at the end of process teacher can measure the students understanding by many factor that enrich the students.
By implementing the complete domains, we can see the students as true individual. I as a teacher candidate can said like that because I think when we really use the three domains we can measure the students by their attitude, thinking skills, emotion, feeling, product. That is can be seen from the daily activities from the students, and not only can measure the students clearly and easily, but also can approach the students to the material given.

Assessment in My Opinion

Assessment is one kind of teaching and learning material. Teaching without assessing is like planting fruit without knowing the taste. So if the taste is bad, it will be bad forever. That is happened because without tasting, we never know the taste then we didn’t know how to make it better so the taste will be same as before. That’s why in my opinion assessment is important in teaching learning process.
It is so regretted because I did not attend the class of this week, so I can’t say a complexes explanation of assessment needed. But actually, based on my experiences in teaching at school experience and private teaching, I have opinion of the effective assessment.
I have done some assessment at class like post test, presentation, round robin games, worksheet. From those kinds of assessment some works some not. As like round robin, it is a fun game with group, when I become a student’s I really enjoy it and get the point of games. But when I becoming a teacher, it is really hard for managing the time of games and also manages the games flow itself. The result at my experience, I can’t measure the students understanding. Assessing students by these games doesn’t work well. Maybe, it also happened because I still learn about teaching and learning process and maybe it is affect of students behavior which is not familiar with games.
About the post test, it really works well. I have used it in every teaching. Giving students a simple test at the end of class makes them practice the lesson they get at that day. And the result is can be measure, for instance by evaluating the test we can know at what stage students make error or misunderstanding. It is work and effective. But remember to give a questions based on the lesson that day, do not take a complex one which is never taught before.
Presentation also works well. It can measure the students’ understanding by listen their presentation. At that presentation, the students will use their knowledge and opinion at speaking. And if there is mistaken, it can be cleared by discussion.
I think the point of assessing is our empathy of student. If we know them well, we can design appropriate assessments. So it will help them in study also help us as a teacher for measure them understanding. By that assessment we can reflect and re-design out teaching learning methods for better tomorrow.

Lesson Plan Yearly

Today’s PETA critics about teacher perception of lesson plan. It is interested topic because there are many different perception based on my friends experienced when assistance their master teacher. Based on my experience itself the teacher s have prepare the lesson plan at the beginning of the year and didn’t revised again the lesson plan, so they do not prepared the lesson plan anymore. Here I look they when teaching, they use their own character and skills for managing the class. They use the lesson plan but without reflection or revised. I appreciate to the teachers, because they can manage the class and lesson very well, and the students was cooperated at the teaching learning process. But in another side, the teacher way of teaching is ineffective because they make their children undeveloped. Why I can say like this? When the teacher prepared the lesson plan at the beginning of the year and without the reflection and revised, it means they didn’t know the situation of the new students. They design the lesson plan based on the children condition before.
Ideally, preparing lesson plan is like a circular process in lesson study. First of all we have to prepare the scenario of lesson, then implementation the lesson plan, after that get the reflection that revised the lesson plan and then prepare again. It is a teacher’s responsible for preparing the lesson plan. So if the teacher didn’t revise moreover didn’t use the lesson plan, the teaching learning process will not develop as the students need. Actually in preparing the lesson plan, we can prepare daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. I think it is no problem when we prepared the lesson plan yearly, because we have known the material use at the whole year. But it must revised every time agree with students character. And remembering that we will teach at the different class but same materials, we have to revise the lesson plan quickly for developing our teaching.
