assessment is very important

Assessment is Very Important

At the school in advance or even now, what do you guys think when they hear the word test? Dizziness? Headache? Confused what to do? And what do you imagine when they hear the word test? Problems that are difficult? The value to be achieved? Study until late at night? And so forth? The things is exactly what I think of when hearing the word test. What about you?

As prospective teachers, when talking about the test then it will be related to the assessment because the test is one way to take an assessment of the student. Learn and discuss with professors and friends, I get a lot of lessons about assessment. During my first school, the assessment is a very scary because everything we have learned will be assessed by tests conducted by the teacher to find out how our understanding of the lessons that have been given by the teacher. And the test is to determine an absolute value of the students in the learning process.

after I learned about and discuss in class MAP assessment, there are many ways to assess students, not only using a test / exam only to students because when teachers do a lot of assessments and by using many ways, teachers can better know / control the detailed understanding of each each student so that students' understanding of assessment of a teacher is not considered something that scary anymore.

In making or regulate the process of assessment of students effectively, we as a prospective teacher must also consider the methods of valuation that we use, whatever the value of the student teacher can be, and how to cover all students to know each student's understanding. This is what needs to be considered by a teacher. Where to take the assessment, a teacher must prepare the rubric-assessment rubric that teachers can focus on what will be assessed from a student. And make judgments in various ways, for example: assessment of student activity in class, group work assessment, pre-test, post test, and so forth. Of them that can be used to assess students. So that students do not think that the test / exam is their absolute value in the learning process (something that is scary).

The most important thing in the assessment is that teachers can see the extent to which students' understanding in teaching and learning, the teacher can see whether the learning undertaken to achieve goals or not, and as a teacher evaluation in teaching and learning, as well as a benchmark for subsequent learning activities.

So, the assessment is important in teaching and learning activities.

Reflection After Mid Test

November 22th, 2011; That was first time for us to came back in PETA course after we have done mid test. In that session, I got many knowledge about assessment although that just introduction of assessment. We started our lesson with draw and write down about our prior knowledge and experience about assessment when we SEP. In that activities, I got one think about assessment, we (when to be a students) looking assessment is scare because it will be to determine our struggle (in 3 years). Assessment is a tool in teaching and learning process to know how students understanding about the topic and can be feedback for next time. Assessment not same with evaluation, because assessment on going process in teaching and learning process, but evaluation on the end lesson.

This is will be our homework as teacher. When we as teacher must know about students ability and their characteristics when we want to make assessment. Don't make assessment out of the box from our learning objective.

Assessment in My Opinion

Assessment is one kind of teaching and learning material. Teaching without assessing is like planting fruit without knowing the taste. So if the taste is bad, it will be bad forever. That is happened because without tasting, we never know the taste then we didn’t know how to make it better so the taste will be same as before. That’s why in my opinion assessment is important in teaching learning process.
It is so regretted because I did not attend the class of this week, so I can’t say a complexes explanation of assessment needed. But actually, based on my experiences in teaching at school experience and private teaching, I have opinion of the effective assessment.
I have done some assessment at class like post test, presentation, round robin games, worksheet. From those kinds of assessment some works some not. As like round robin, it is a fun game with group, when I become a student’s I really enjoy it and get the point of games. But when I becoming a teacher, it is really hard for managing the time of games and also manages the games flow itself. The result at my experience, I can’t measure the students understanding. Assessing students by these games doesn’t work well. Maybe, it also happened because I still learn about teaching and learning process and maybe it is affect of students behavior which is not familiar with games.
About the post test, it really works well. I have used it in every teaching. Giving students a simple test at the end of class makes them practice the lesson they get at that day. And the result is can be measure, for instance by evaluating the test we can know at what stage students make error or misunderstanding. It is work and effective. But remember to give a questions based on the lesson that day, do not take a complex one which is never taught before.
Presentation also works well. It can measure the students’ understanding by listen their presentation. At that presentation, the students will use their knowledge and opinion at speaking. And if there is mistaken, it can be cleared by discussion.
I think the point of assessing is our empathy of student. If we know them well, we can design appropriate assessments. So it will help them in study also help us as a teacher for measure them understanding. By that assessment we can reflect and re-design out teaching learning methods for better tomorrow.

assignment oh assignment....

if we talk about assignment,,,
i remember when i was a students in senior high school that when i will have a test in my class.
i have come to school earlier and study together with my friend but it is so nerves...
and sometime teacher make questions that more difficult than students have learned.
now as teacher candidate i know that assignment is one of important thing that i must  prepare well to my students...
but i must understand when the students will feel comfort...
and also i must make a high quality assignment that must cover the student's ability.

Missing Class,^^

Well, I should be heartened because I could not attend to the 5th PETA class so that I loss the chance to get experience of learning with Mrs. Lydia. Moreover, my friend tells me that last Tuesday they were discussing about classroom assessment, I feel really miserably cause of it. Thus, I am amused enough because of the succeed presentation of my Social Activity Group, our concept was accepted, yeay! ^^
Back to the topic, :D
Classroom assessment is one of the most important processes in learning—in my opinion, it makes teaching and learning process perfect. Without assessment we could not do the evaluation of our learning activities because one of its functions is for helping teacher and students evaluate the effectiveness of their learning process. Unfortunately, in my last experience, assessment such as written test was considered as the only one learning outcomes that should be emphasized for getting the best mark. Hence, most of students—include me—tend to focus to the final test rather than the learning process itself.
SSE opens my mind about assessment. I am really happy being here, one of the reasons is because of the assessment. SSE provides an innovative assessment which inspires me that there are many ways to know the learning outcomes of students’ learning. SSE always assess our HOT (High Order Thinking)-skills rather than our LOT-skills. It makes me easier because actually I don’t really like the assessment which the question words are MENTION and EXPLAIN,^^
Assessment. What is in your mind when you hear assessment?
Yup, that is what I have learn last week. Its question is also asked by Mam Lidya for us at the opening of class.

Before, when I hear assessment, I always imagine about test, score, examination, rubric, etc. I think it is similar to evaluation that aimed to measure students' comprehension. But, after having discussion and getting more explanation from Mam Lidya about what assessment in the classroom is, I know that both are different but very related.

Assessment is more about measuring the learning process included students' comprehension, the effectiveness of instruction by using so many ways. It can be an observation, quiz, game, open question, etc. While Evaluation, lies at the end of process it self. It is more about grading the learning result by using test or examination as a concrete proof that the examination can be designed as creative as possible. Like what my lecturer often do at SSE examination.

Why did I say that both are very related? Because by doing assessment intensively, as a teacher we know what we have to do next, what we can do for enhance students' comprehension to reach the goals or objectives of learning by getting a good score in evaluation process

That is my reflection for this week. Can't wait for study more about making effective assessment on the next session. I want to make an assessment that can stimulate their critical thinking to develop their ideas in fulfilling the goals and objectives of learning.

Thank You

Classroom Assessment

The teachers are teaching in the classroom, and they have a goals of their teaching, which they want the students able to understanding when did learning in the classroom. So, the teachers did assessment to students, to know understanding their students. According to Hein and Price (1994) explained that, everything did by students in the classroom can be used as assessment. Accoarding the result when I had read of a web, which in there explained that  there are two categories assessment, that are formative assessment and summative assessment.
Formative assessments are ongoing assessments, reviews, and observations in a classroom. So, task of the teacher is did observations to the students and see how the students, are they understood or not understood with explanation of the teacher?, and the teacher able see that event and read situation in the classroom. So, the teachers able to did reflection about their teaching, are the goals of learning able achieved or not.
Summative assessments are typically used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and services at the end of an academic year or at a pre-determined time. On this event, which the teachers must be do an evaluation to all result of during learning in the classroom. From matter that, I become remember when I still become a student in the senior high school, which the teachers always give assignment in the class, homework, and exam day or semester. Apparentely, matter that is a something have a goals, which my teachers apparentely was doing assessment to me and other students.
Reflect on my school experience, I become remember that apparentely task of a teacher is very much, the matter that able I see and felt when prepare materials to teaching and also must be think to make an assignment to do assessment and to see understanding of my students. But, I also stiil confuse how give an assessment to my students, when I had became a teacher. I very want able to make an effective assessment, and able to create an assessment to make my students don’t boring. I hope that in the course PETA I able know how to make an effective assessment and how to give an assessment in a manner have variation.

The 8th Reflection of PETA

In the last meeting, my class learnt about assessment. Assessment is very important thing in learning. As a teacher we should to be objective when assess students. I have an experience when I was study at Junior High School. Sometimes a teacher was more tolerant to mistake of students who diligent and clever in class than students who usually make mistake in class. Although the teacher never teaches in the classroom before. This problem was happened to my friend in 8th grade. He was my friend in 7th grade before. He was one of naughty students so it made another teacher knew about him.  When new school year, I had a same class with him again. When he tried to answer a question in front of the class, he could not answer it. So the teachers said that he was never serious and no attend to study but actually the case was happened in the first learning. How the teacher knew about his characteristics? I think this case was often we see. Where a teacher was judge students because their attitude. This is what we must avoid as a teacher. Besides that, I think that assessment should be open. By the openness assessment, students know where they get the score.  It made students easier to evaluate their work. By the openness assessment, the assessments’ subjective can be avoid.  Reflect in my experiences at SSE, I know that a lot of assignments that we can use in learning besides paper and pencil test. I really like assessments which use in SSE and openness assessment. This openness can be seen from the assessments’ rubric for every assignment.  It make we can know the criteria to get good score. I think is enough, See you in the next reflection .....:)

when I first heard about the assessment.
I remember when my school. I am very aware that the assessment is very important because students need to assess objectively, in addition to the assessment rubric. I do not want to assess students in one hand, therefore the presence of varying rubric, which includes the assessment of many sides.
This assessment must also be known by students. because it can provide motivation to try to provide the best in learning.

reflection about assessment

Last meeting, I learn more about assessment. How to make a good assessment and why the assessment is important. I have a bad experience about assessment that my teacher gave to me and my friends. Many teacher give assessment subjectively, and the effect is many student feel disappointed with the result. My teacher often gave value for me and my friends with see the person not from the result from our work and exam. As a teacher candidate I must learn more how to make a good assessment for my students and objective assessment also. Because I wanna be a good teacher.

its my challenge......

Assessment in Teaching and Learnng Process

“Assessment”…
When I hearth the word so there are many meaning of assessment on my mind. I was remembering the assessment that is given from my teacher since in kindergarten until university. There are homework, presentation, worksheet, experiment, product, etc. Most of them was paper and pencil test. Therefore, it was not good because assessment only assessed in one side. For example in Senior High School commonly, the teacher gave paper and pencil test and recently the practical only in art’s subjects. We have to study hard to read and to do many exercises before we got the assessment. In fact, teaching and learning process was not effective because the teacher only delivered the content of material because it only need a little bit practice especially for mathematics subject.
There are my experiences about assessment. Base on the above explanation I can learn that is the assessment are important for my future student because we can look the result process in teaching and learning as far as we delivered the knowledge are looked from the assessment’s tools. It is as a medium for evaluates what we did and also the abilities of our students. Firstly, I want to explain about the evaluation. I said it because every activity that we did also have been met many obstacles in class. For example, reflecting my school experience last week that I thought in Senior High School about probability’s topic. We used grouping to do the worksheet because we thought is useful for decreasing the study stress of math and after that they can share it each other. But unfortunately it doesn’t work well for grouping the student. They are not familiar with grouping method so they need much time to do the worksheet in group. So many student were not giving contribution in group work, I observe them that only one student did it and the other did not do anything. And then the result of the quiz do not satisfied. The important thing is we used same method of teaching and learning in every class. In fact they did it fast to finish the worksheet so they can do the presentation in every group. In this case, we as teacher candidate have to more creative in each situation to ready give various methods although it out of our planning but certainly do not forget the essensial of content. Secondly, it has linkage of the first explanation which is the evaluated process we knew students’ disabilities to assess them we have to think the level of their intelligence or difficulties appropriate taxonomy bloom-understanding, remembering, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating, use the varieties assessment to assess multiple intelligences that we can put in psychomotor and also affective assessment. We can use various assessment to assess it like workshop, exhibition, project, etc.
The other assessment is UAN or National Examination on 2009 that I have been felt. Although we got prestige achievement in one institute but our examination is not passed so it gave difficulties to continue our study. It happened in other place on one time. Finally, the scariness for facing UAN is felt of the students in Indonesia. But now, the government has to change the system to respect of the school report. Base on the fact that happened in Indonesia so as a teacher candidate in the future we have to change our assessment if there only make our student scare to do the test. Actually the goal of learn is “learn for fun and learn for understanding”.
From the assessment we can knew what we have been caught the goal of the study or not.

Ok, that’s all my reflection of our last meeting.
Thank you my all lecturer and my friends for inspiring me to be better student for better teacher in the future

Assessment vs Evaluation

First impression: what do you mind if you listen “assessment”?

On Tuesday, November 22th, 2011, we met again with PETA. We discussed about assessment. A word which describe assessment is “Penilaian”. When there is question  about what do you mind if you listen “assessment”? I drew a result of exam (KHS and Score on paper answer). We also discussed about evaluation, what is different about evaluation.  It is real discussion, the discussion is very exciting. There is many extra ordinary arguments.

About assessment and evaluation I read at http://global.cscc.edu/assessment/AssessEval.shtml, according Dayton and Ohio, “assessment is the analysis and use of data by students, faculty, and/or departments to make decisions about improvements in teaching and learning.  And evaluation is the analysis and use of data by faculty to make judgments about student performance”. I agree whit them because Assessment and evaluation is really different, although almost the same, it is equally assess the students. I agree with fikri’s argument that Assessment is done at the beginning of the inquiry, whereas evaluation is usually done at the end. And I think assessment notes down all data, both subjective and objective, but while evaluation notes down whether there has been changes or improvements in learning proses.

Note:
Be teacher with skills assessment.

Reflection week 5

Wow, after mid exam we have great topic, what is it? It is about assessment. I like the opening of our class. We must draw and write what we thinking when we hear the word ‘Assessment’. The next my favorite activities is discussion based on our experience in the high school. Assessment is ongoing activities that to measure student understanding and their prior knowledge. In assessment there is no judgment. Product of assessment is like rapport. How about evaluation? Evaluation is different with assessment. In this part we can make a judgment who is the higher, middle or the lower score?

Reflection_Septy Cartika Sari_2010110036_After Mid Test

At the first meeting after the mid test, we learned about effective assessment and the various assessments. Ever since I stepped on my college increasingly know that assessment is not only done at the end of material like do daily tests or final exam and after that getting report cards or KHU.  But when teaching and learning process is also do assessment.
When I was in junior high,  my teacher only make assessments from mid-test, final exam and daily tests. They rarely make assessments when learning and teaching process. My opinion that assessment as is not effective. When we just see the final results of the exam students good their results are not necessarily original, there is the possibility of fraud such as cheating, open note, open book and the other. So do assessment when learning and teaching process was very important to know the development of students' abilities.
But when my high school, my teacher started to apply the assessment of various aspect like presentation, post test, pretest, class participant ,mid test and final test. actually the assessment of various aspect it is more objective because often we find teachers giving good grades to students because of family background such as a rich kid so he was given good marks as well as familiar with his parents, his brother knew so well rated good, and the other
So we as teacher candidates must make assessments of various aspect and should be objective, jangan sampai ada pihak – pihak yang dirugikan.

E-Reflection PETA in week 5

Assessment The term generally used to refer to all activities teachers which use to help students development and to measure student progress. Where the assessment system is divided into two types, they are: a formative assessment where the assessment is valid from the beginning to the end of the lesson, and summative assessment is the assessment of the end result of  the results with ignore the process
When I was senior high school, I often to found summative assessment from a teacher, where a teacher gives assessment at the end of the lesson,  I think it is  not effective if a teacher provides an assessment only with summative assessment without  formative assessment because that no  comprehensive assessment if just used one assessment. And sometimes teachers provide an assessment as a benchmark  for the standard compare the level of intelligence  of each student.
The main  purpose of the assessment should be used to find out the level knowledge of students about that subject, this is done as a consideration for proceed  to the next lesson or not. but still many teachers who ignore the main purpose of an assessment, not only that, there are so  many teachers in Indonesia that provides a subjective assessment, where teachers provide an assessment according to  their own judgments without considering their ability, this causes some students hated them. Therefore,  we as the next generation of teachers must be really - really  give an objective assessment, and provide an assessment to know student knowlegde but not to compare their intelligence. because we know every  individual has a different  intelligence. Hopefully we can be a teacher who brought Indonesian into a better. ^ _ ^

E-Reflection week 8 Principle of effective teaching and assessment

Welcome back to PETA course again,,,yeay,,,It’s almost two weeks, we had no this course and I was really miss it.
As usual, we have a new topic that has to be discussed together in every session. And yesterday, we have to discuss a topic that it is really important for us as teachers’ candidate. Yes, it is about what assessment is and how to make the assessment itself effective in class. As known that assessment appears to be the topic on every primary school's agenda at this moment in time and it is also the important thing that should be considered in teaching and learning process. However teaching is not only teaching the material but also giving the meaningful experience for my students.
Based on the discussion result, I just realized that it’s a little bit hard to create assessment that can test students’ understanding and also cover their comprehension. It takes time and need some creativities from the teachers itself to make good assessment for their students. This opinion has change since my first impression earlier on in my teaching career in SMA 12 Jakarta. I had to use various types of assessment because I believe that those can help me to assess my students effectively and see their learning progress. I know that the main purpose of assessment is not focused on students’ achievements. It exists and should be used with equal balance to make a well rounded judgement of an individual child. So in this case, I tried to involve students’ participation on it because I want my students active in class and it’s better for them to get information about their skill that need to be improved. Although in fact, it was not perfectly success to do because there were some students that still not familiar with my assessment model, but I was still satisfied because the assessment that I gave to them at least can motivate almost students in the classroom to improve their performance and also encourage them to participate to assess their own learning progress.
Finally, I got the point that the important part of the application of the assessment is teacher willingness to work hard to apply the assessment which can appropriate to assess their students’ performance. In looking at assessment in this reflective way and based on the last experience, as a teacher candidate I believe that I still have a chance and a long journey ahead in terms of developing a useful effective assessment system for my students in the next opportunity.
